Srinagar, Jan 20 (KNO): Socio political activist and Congress leader Dr. Waleed Karra stressed Monday the restoration of statehood for Jammu & Kashmir as the immediate and achievable goal. Speaking to media men in Srinagar, in-charge Shaletang constituency, Dr. Karra, son of JKPCC Chief Tariq Hameed Karra, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), highlighted the Congress Party's opposition to the abrogation of Article 370, calling August 5, 2019, a "black day in the history of Kashmir." He highlighted that the Congress Working Committee (CWC) was the first to pass a resolution against the move, asserting the party’s commitment to protecting the rights and identity of the people of Jammu & Kashmir. “Unfortunately, the matter is sub judice, and the Supreme Court's decision went against us,” he said. “But the Congress Party believes in delivering achievable results. At this moment, our focus should be on the restoration of statehood, which is both necessary and within reach.” Dr. Karra criticized the central government for its handling of Jammu & Kashmir's political aspirations and called for a phased approach to addressing the region's issues. “Statehood is a stepping stone. Once that is achieved, we can build on it and demand a special status akin to Article 371 or similar provisions. But talking about Article 370 without a clear roadmap is futile.” He also underscored the need for strong leadership capable of negotiating with Delhi. "This is not a charity that we are asking for, this is our right, and it has to be fought for. Statehood will restore respect and recognition, and only then can we move toward reclaiming other rights." In a sharp critique of political opportunism, Dr. Karra condemned those who supported the abrogation of Article 370 but now claim to be its defenders. "We do not believe in theatrics. The Congress Party stands firm on practical and meaningful solutions for the people of Jammu & Kashmir," he added. Dr. Karra expressed hope for a change in governance at the centre, envisioning a Congress-led government that could bring back a sense of dignity and autonomy for the region. "The Supreme Court's verdict on Article 370 was a travesty of justice. But with time, we will achieve what was taken from us. For now, the priority is to fight for statehood and lay the groundwork for a brighter future."—(KNO)
